Apply for Your Health Card (MSP)

Your B.C. health card is called the BC Services Card. It shows that you are enrolled in the Medical Services Plan (MSP), which covers the cost of medically necessary services from doctors and specialists. This is the most important first step to access healthcare.

  • Waiting Period: Please be aware that there is a mandatory waiting period to get MSP coverage. It consists of the rest of the month you arrive in B.C., plus two full months.

  • Private Insurance: It is highly recommended to get private health insurance to cover your family's medical needs during this waiting period.

  • How to Apply: You can apply online as soon as you arrive in B.C.

Finding Everyday Medical Care

Once you have your MSP coverage, here’s how to access routine medical care.

Finding a Family Doctor (For Long-Term Care) A family doctor is your main point of contact for long-term health needs. To find one who is accepting new patients, you can register with the provincial “Health Connect Registry.”

For Same-Day Needs (When you can’t see a family doctor)

  • Walk-In Clinics: For non-emergency issues like a cold, minor injury, or prescription refill, you can visit a walk-in clinic without an appointment.

  • Urgent and Primary Care Centres (UPCCs): For issues that are not life-threatening but need to be seen the same day (like infections, sprains, or high fevers), UPCCs are your best option.

In an Emergency

  • For any life-threatening emergency (e.g., chest pain, difficulty breathing, serious injury), call 9-1-1 immediately or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

  • Local Hospitals: Surrey is served by the Fraser Health Authority. The main hospital is Surrey Memorial Hospital.
